1. You knew I was referring to Led Zepplin’s ”Stairway to Heaven” when you read Stairway

2. Its old school

3. The song is over 8 minutes long – which makes it ideal for a warm up, and keeps you going into your core sweat educing activity

4. When it came up tonight on shuffle, it made me really happy I was working out

5. Because …sometimes words have two meanings

My Polar fitness watch just sent me an update regarding my weekly exercise log. It seems last week I only worked out one time, and burned 429 calories. I’m no data analyst but I’m thinking that is not enough for me to lose weight.

Matter of fact, I just read that even the old walk 30 minutes a day trick isn’t enough to really lose weight. According to a new study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers enrolled 201 overweight and obese women in a weight loss program. All limited their daily calories to between 1200 and 1500. After six months, the women had lost 9 to 10 percent of their body weight. Not bad, right?

Here is the problem: they couldn’t keep it off. By the end of two years, the average participant had maintained a loss of only 5% of her starting weight. There were, however some who had more success.

Friends at home, here is the key. 25% of the women were able to maintain a loss of at least 10% of their starting weight. How is that, you ask?

These participants exercised about 275 minutes a week, burning an average of 1,835 calories. This translates to just under an hour a day for at least five days a week.

Note the current recommendations are for just 30 minutes a day or 150 minutes a week, significantly less than the amount needed for success according to this study.

My conclusion? I need to work out more! I’m getting on the treadmill now!

Pie and turkey are so yummy,
I ate so much it blew up my tummy.
Now it time to work out again,
Otherwise I’ll look like a fat Christmas hen.

I’ve been feeling a bit strange lately: lightheaded, tingly, woozy even. I thought maybe it was because I had a bit of a stomach flu and I was just off kilter, or I was stressed from a horrible business trip, or maybe even that I was having a blood sugar issue from overindulging in cupcakes and the like.

Yesterday I was so off my game I started running into things and getting sweaty from minimal activity. I really felt like I was having a hard time putting together sentences. In fairness, I did have that stomach flu. But that didn’t seem like enough of an explanation. I just was not feeling myself. [click to continue…]

I’m having an affair… taking it to the courts…

The tennis courts that is!

Chingy and I visited our long lost tennis club last night.  It was perfect – a crisp 72 degrees, the gentle buzz of the early autumn insects against the hum of the stadium lights… Well, court lights anyway.

Friends…  I love me some tennis.  I had completely forgotten what an insane workout it is as well as the level of delight it brings me.

Based on my fitness watch calculations, in a set and a half (we were too winded to complete the entire second set so we played to four), there were approximately 700 calories burned in a quick yet exciting 45 minutes.

I believe tennis is so effective at burning calories because it’s similar to running…but amped up.  Basically, if you are competitive (and I am), tennis is a hard core series of wind sprints with a bit of hitting the ball around.

Love it!

Sorry treadmill!  I’m stepping out!

I just fell in love again… with my treadmill.

I know you’re thinking… “She owns a treadmill?…  And shes chubby?”

Nonesense, right?  One would think these things are mutually exclusive by they are not my friends.

Happily, I got back on the treadmill.  I believe this is due to my extreme laziness that has prevented me from driving 5 miles to my gym and attending spinning classes.

How fun is it to watch Wheel of Fortune when running?  You have no idea!  Lemme break it down:

A – I love Wheel of Fortune

B – I love shouting– even when it’s just answers at the TV

C – Apparently I love running again.  I feel so stealthy!

Maybe I was inspired by James’ running experiment… or maybe it feels good to run when you are down 10 or so pounds and have less chub to lug around… maybe I felt motivated because I got a postcard from my friends at weight watchers congratulating me on my benchmark loss of 10 pounds…

All I know is…I’m in love again.  Its like a new romance – or more accurately, a reconciled one.  I know my treadmill has been there for me all along – waiting by itself in the corner, just hoping I would jump on.  And I did!  I feel whole again.

Treadmill, “you complete me”.

XOXO, Laura

I guess I will follow the lead of everyone else and make a political statement.

See photo below.  Notice how I am only consuming the blue popcorn kernels?

Skills, my friends.  The skills of a hard core, registered Democrat.

Don’t forget to VOTE on November 4…  Unless you eat the red ones….
